Doris Lynn Thetford's Obituary
Doris Lynn Rainey Thetford, Our Mama, Gramma, and Aunt Doris went to Heaven on September 12, 2020 to be with her grandson and the rest of her family who have been waiting patiently for her. She was 95, born at her parents’ home January 16, 1925 in Klondike, Texas. The daughter of Andie C. Rainey and Ida Beulah Sims Rainey. Doris was next to the youngest of nine children, predeceased by her parents, her brothers (Claudel, AC, Deon, Buckner, Bill and John Rainey), her sisters (Edna Jo Maynard and Glenna Kathleen McKee), and her grandson Kenny Skinner. Her husband William Thetford also preceded her in death.
Doris is survived by her three daughters: Wanda J’Lynn Kersten of Denton; Kathleen Shearer and her husband Mel of Forney; and Gay Daneman and her husband Phil of Dallas. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Doug and Ronnie Rockey, Elizabeth Adkins and her husband Kevin, Kevin Skinner, Dawn Sawyer and her husband Warren, Susan Quattrin and her husband Michael. She was also great-grandmother of ten: Blake, Andrew, Nick, Lesli, Chris, Deja, Hunter, Jalen, Lilli, and Matteo.
Doris was blessed with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved each one dearly and attended every extracurricular activity she could. Her last time to enjoy these events was watching great-grandson Matteo play basketball in February of this year.
She was Aunt Doris to many nieces and nephews. She was simply "Gramma" to friends of grandkids and neighbors all of whom she loved as her own.
Doris moved to Dallas and worked at the Republic National Bank of Dallas as a teller. She was employed before and after the Republic Bank Tower was built with a light you could see as far as Klondike. She eventually changed jobs and retired from Pitney Bowes. She went back to work for Liland Florist as a bookkeeper in Lakewood where she finally found her love for plants and flowers. After fully retiring from Liland’s, she became an active member of the Land O’Lakes Garden Club. She won many awards for her floral designs that she learned from the designers at Liland’s.
Doris loved sports of all sorts. As far back as anyone can remember, she loved watching the Globetrotters in the 50’s on TV. She spent many hours in her last years watching anything she could find on the sports channels. Unconditionally, she was a lifelong Cowboys’ fan. She held season tickets to the Cotton Bowl and Texas Stadium.
In March of this year, she went to Cheyenne Medical Lodge in Mesquite where she lived for the past six months. We would like to thank the nurses, caregivers, and the entire staff for taking such wonderful care of our precious Mama/Gramma while she was there.
We will be celebrating her Life on October 30th at 12:00pm at Restland Funeral Home with Reverend Bill Lundy. We hope you will be able to join us in this celebration and share your favorite memories of her with us.
Doris loved life and was ready to be with Jesus. She loved colors and would always say “Oooo, I like that blouse”. So, in her honor, let’s all wear our brightest shirts and blouses while she dances once again in Heaven. Thank you for sharing your memories with us.
