Ms. Doris Champion Tuffly's Obituary
Doris Champion Tuffly of Dallas, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2022 at the age of 96 at her loving home, Belmont Village Turtle Creek Assisted Living. Doris was born in Dallas to Imogene Boone and William Clayton Champion on July 2,1926.
Doris graduated from North Dallas High School in 1944 and attended Texas Tech University. She first worked for the 8th Service Command in Dallas during World War II before moving to Midland, Texas to work in a secretarial position for an oil company. She met her husband there, Harry Joseph Tuffly, Jr. (also originally from Dallas), and they were married in February 1952. Harry preceded her in death in 1966.
She lived in Midland and Odessa Texas and Durango, Colorado before returning to Dallas with their two children upon her husband’s death. Doris worked for the Dallas Independent School District as an administrative assistant for 20 years, at Martha Turner Reilly Elementary, Bryan Adams High School, and most years at the Ross Avenue Administration Building.
She enjoyed travel, news, interior decor and the Dallas Cowboys.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and younger sister, Billie Jean Rice. She is survived by her children, Dan Tuffly and wife Sydney, of Silver City, New Mexico, and Susan Gandy and husband Woodrow, of Dallas, Texas. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Stephanie Given (Chris) of McKinney, David Tuffly of Austin, Matthew Gandy (Brittany) of Dallas and Laura Wells (Michael) of Santa Barbara, California. She is survived by three great grandchildren, Ashlyn and Scarlett Given, and Samantha Gandy. Nephews Michael Rice of Dallas and Mark Rice of Corpus Christi also survive Doris.
A funeral will be held Tuesday, December 27 at 10 am at Wildwood Chapel, Restland Cemetery in Dallas, the Rev. Stanley Copeland of Lovers Lane United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow nearby. Afriends and family viewing will be held Monday, December 26 from 4 to 6 pm at Restland. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Zoe Geh Foundation, care of Lovers Lane United Methodist Church, 9200 Inwood Road,Dallas, TX 75220.
