Dorothea M. Sachs-Rice, 88, children’s author and artist of (Baby Sister, 1987) died on June 26, 2021. Dorothea was born June 4, 1933 to Artists: Hugo L. and Elizabeth A. Sachs, in NYC, NY. She graduated from the School of Industrial Arts, in NYC, NY (1951), served in the U.S. Airforce (1951-52), and studied Art at Universities of Oklahoma and Texas. She married Emmett M. Rice Esq. (d. 2011) in 1952, and bore three children: Elizabeth, Mary, and Emmett (Nancy). She had eleven grandchildren: Sarina, Benito, Elishava, Aleta, Marisa, Jordan, Benjamin, Beau, Ian, Zaid, Michael (d.2019), and seven great grandchildren: Tristan, Reece, Talan, Brandt, Cashman, Dallas, and Ty Michael. In the 1960s Dorothea participated in the Civil Rights Movement, helped Disabled Veterans, Aid’s Patients, and rescued and rehabilitated cats. From 1974 to 1994 in Dallas, Tx., she got her Real Estate license, bought, rented out and flipped houses, owned a store; “Country Corner,” and retired to her lake home/Art Studio in Tyler,TX. In 2010, a stroke (left her partially blind), and necessitated a medical move to PA. Always the artist, she worked on a children’s book of her paintings, “The Artist and Her Cat”, shortly before she died. She was interred at Restland Cemetery in Dallas,TX. Charitable donations in her memory should go to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
