Dorothea "Dot" Smith's Obituary
Dot Smith, 92, passed away on March 16, 2016 in Dallas, TX. She was born on October 9, 1923 to C.E. and Mary Bilbo in Tylertown, Mississippi. In high school, she met L. B. Smith, who became the love of her life. After surviving Pearl Harbor in WWII, he returned to Magnolia, Mississippi, where they married in 1945. Together they raised two daughters and one son. They moved to Dallas in 1952. Over the next 63 years, she was active in Brook Haven Book Club, D.A.R., Assistance League and Meals on Wheels. She recently volunteered with Lady Links at Highland Springs. The Smith family joined Schreiber Memorial UMC and remained loyal to and active in the church for 49 years. She was a Sunday school teacher, past president of UMW, Wesley Rankin volunteer and mission coordinator. She became the church librarian after completing her library science degree at TWU. Delivering her home baked sugar cookies and visiting with elderly members was her passion. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 46 years, her parents, her sister, Kathleen Schwing, and two sons-in-law, Doug Allen and Gene Mitts. She is survived by her three children, Nancy Allen, Debby Mitts, Dr. J. B. Smith and wife Nada. She had eight grandchildren, Kristi Jones, Keith Allen, Rebecca and Rachel Mitts, Kathryn and Preston Smith, Stephanie and Oscar Jasz and two great grandchildren, Brianna Jones and J. D. Allen. Services will be held on Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 pm at Schreiber Memorial United Methodist Church, 4525 Rickover, Dallas. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Visiting Nurses Association of Dallas, Wesley Rankin or Christ United Methodist Church of Plano.
