Dorothy Harris Carter's Obituary
Dorothy Harris Carter passed on to be with her Lord on February 14, 2018. Da’V, as she was known to friends and family, was born on April 9th, 1920 in Dallas. She attended North Dallas High School where she met her husband Bill in the senior play. She graduated from SMU where she was president of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Da’V and Bill were married for 37 years before his death in 1978. Together they shared a love of travel. Among their favorite places was Snow Mountain Ranch, part of the YMCA of the Rockies, where they donated several cabins and the Aquatic Center. Green Tree Farm in Sanger, Texas also held a special place for the extended Harris/Carter family. Dorothy led a very active life after Bill’s death. She had an incredible group of friends and was involved in a number of organizations including Dallas Woman’s Club, Marianne Scruggs Garden Club, Mentor Club and Lakeside Browning Club. In the early 1940’s Dorothy and Bill were among the early members of University Park United Methodist Church and founding members and first Presidents of the Mr. and Mrs. Class. Dorothy raised three generations that would call UPUMC their church home. Like many of the faithful in her generation, Dorothy loved to sing hymns. The chorus of one of her favorites seems appropriate. From In the Garden, “And He walks with me, and He talks with me, and He tells me I am His own; and the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known.” Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, son Lee, parents Hallie and Felix Harrris and brothers Ben, Rex, and Ned. She is survived by her daughter Carol Utkov (Gary), daughter Mollie Newman (Dub), daughter-in-law Martha Carter, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren who all loved their Da’V dearly. We want to particularly thank the wonderful caregivers who enriched Da’V’s life over the last five years. Memorial gifts may be made to: University Park United Methodist Church 4024 Caruth Boulevard Dallas, Texas 75225.
