Dorothy Mildred Coonrod's Obituary
Passed this life early Christmas Eve after a long battle with Alzheimers. Dorothy was born in Denison, Texas, on November 17, 1912 to Clark and Mattie May O’Dell Spencer. At a very early age Dorothy lost her mother and baby brother to the flu epidemic in North Texas. On April 18, 1931 Dorothy married Cecil E. Coonrod, also of Denison. Their son, William Clark, was born October 28, 1934. Dorothy worked for the Army Corp of Engineers when they were building Lake Texhoma, while Cecil was in the Army Air Corp in World War II serving in England for 3 years. Afterward, they resided in Denison, Tulsa, Garland, Shreveport and Dallas before moving to Chicago, Illinois in 1961 as Cecil pursued his career with Kraft Foods. During his career with Kraft, they traveled extensively worldwide on business and pleasure, and continued after his retirement in 1974 until his death in 1989. She continued her world travels after moving to Chambrel Retirement Home in Garland for many years. Dorothy was a loyal and supportive partner in life and a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a member of several Baptist churches as they moved around the country but her longest and closest association was with the First Baptist Church of Dallas, serving in many capacities for her Sunday School Class. She was the beloved Memaw to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by the loves of her life, Cecil and her son Bill in 2003. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Marian Coonrod Hern of Fairview, Texas; her grandchildren, Don Coonrod and wife Cecile of Katy, Texas, Robert Coonrod and wife Pamela of Flower Mound, Texas, and Shari Coonrod Walters and husband Mark of Dallas. She is also survived by 7 great-grandchildren, Sgt. Kara Coonrod USMC, Oahu, Hawaii, Scott and Laura of Katy, Grayson and Paige of Flower Mound, and Travis and Ryan Walters of Dallas. Dorothy was dearly loved by her family and will be deeply missed. The family wishes to thank Tommie Hatfield and her staff at TLC Homes of Dallas for their loving care in Dorothy’s final years and Advanced Hospice. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 pm, Monday, December 29, 2008 at Restland’s Wildwood Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
