Dorothy Tomlinson Davis' Obituary
DAVIS, DOROTHY TOMLINSON was born in Fulbright, Texas on January 25, 1915 to Linnie Philips and Ross Tomlinson. She passed away on February 9, 2013 in Dallas, Texas. Her family moved to Dallas to the Highland Park area in the early 1920’s, where her father joined his brother in owning and operating the University Garage near the SMU campus. She attended Armstrong Elementary School and graduated from Highland Park High School. She met her future husband, Charlie T. Davis, while he was an SMU law student. They married in 1935 at her parents’ Highland Park home shortly after his graduation from law school. She was a support to her husband through out his lengthy law career and during his service in several judiciary positions, including his tenure as Judge of the Criminal District Court Number 2 in Dallas. Their marriage lasted for 60 years, until his death in 1995. Together, they held many memberships and leadership positions in community, civic, and church organizations and were very active in all events surrounding their three children, Dennie, Debbie, and Charles. Dorothy Davis served as a Bluebird and Campfire Leader, and helped with all of her children’s sports and school events and many of her grandchildren’s events. She was active in several PTAs and served as president at Longfellow and Obadiah Knight Elementary Schools. She was made a double Life Member of the Texas State PTA and a Life Member of the National PTA. She is a past president of the Democratic Women of Dallas County, and the Society for Abandoned and Neglected Children, Inc., and was a charter member of the Freedoms Foundation Valley Forge Dallas Chapter. She was a founder of The Way Back House, Inc which serves as a way to help former prison inmates build a life that is positive and productive. She and her husband were charter members of University Park United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of Wesley Women. She had the opportunity to address the church congregation in October of 2012, the year of their 73rd anniversary. A reception was given in her honor afterwards, attended by a large number of church members and 35 of her family members. Survivors include daughters Dennie and son-in-law George Lindsey of Dallas; Deborah and son-in-law Ray Hicks of Becker Community, Kaufman County; and a son Charlie and daughter-in-law Toni Davis of Kemp. Grandchildren and spouses include Deedra and Kris Scherm, Kemp; Charles “C.E. “and Carrie Lindsey, Wiley; Raymond and Laura Hicks, Forney; Miles and Tara Hicks, Becker; Sarah and Steven Hatley, Becker; Michael and Cathy Davis, Dallas, and Charlie T. Davis, Dallas. Great-grandchildren include Lauren and Brody Hicks, David, Keifer, and Charlie Scherm, Jack and Claire Lindsey, and Colin Davis. She was preceded in death by three of her grandchildren, Garrett Hicks, David Mark Lindsey, and Jonathan Ross Davis. Other survivors include nieces and spouses, Mollie and Bill Stinson of Hillsboro, Susan and Dave Huff of California., and nephews and spouses, Ross and Madeleine Termin of California, George and Judy Jordan of Dallas, Dave Davis of Dallas, and Bill and Anna Harriette Foshee of California, and many great-nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 1:00 PM in Restland Memorial Park. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to University Park United Methodist Church or to a charity of your choice.
