Dorothy Mae Dickerson's Obituary
Dot Dickerson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed from the arms of her family into the arms of her Lord on Friday, October 3, 2014, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born in Dallas on May 15, 1930 to Jesse and Mae Goode Farrow. She is survived by her children: Jan Dickerson of Dallas, Bob Dickerson and his wife, Peggy of Austin, John Dickerson and his wife, Melinda of Dallas; grandchildren: Elizabeth Dickerson, Bobby Dickerson and his wife, Kaity, Audrey Dickerson, Hank Dickerson, John Dickerson, Kayla Dickerson, Ginger Dickerson; sister, Anita Sutherland; sister-in-law, Mildred Walker; and many nieces and nephews. Dot graduated from Sunset High School in 1947 and received two Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Education from Baylor University in 1950. Dot was vice-president of Alpha Omega Club, which later became Pi Beta Phi sorority. While at Baylor, Dot met the love of her life, Hank Dickerson. Hank, also from Dallas, had just returned to play football for Baylor after two years of service in the Southwest Pacific during the Second World War. Dot was a Baylor Beauty Nominee, and Hank lettered four years as an end and place kicker. Dot and Hank were married after graduation on March 16, 1951, and made Dallas their home. Their lives centered around their three children, their church, their friends, and building Hank’s real estate business, Hank Dickerson Company Realtors. Dot taught in DISD for three years. She loved to shop for antiques, and Hank loved the game of golf, and together they enjoyed many special family times and memories at places including Hilton Head Island, Sea Island, Horseshoe Bay, Keystone, and Scotland. Dot was blessed with many friends who were dear to her. She enjoyed memberships in the Dallas Women’s Club, Dallas Country Club, Marianne Scruggs Garden Club, Junior Mentor Club, and her beloved Bridge group. Working as a volunteer at Dallas Theological Seminary’s Luke’s Closet was a special joy to her for many years. Hank and Dot were dedicated members of First Baptist Church, and in her later life, Dot was a member in the Mary/Martha Class at Park Cities Baptist Church. Dot shared her love of the Lord through her involvement in Bible Study Fellowship and hosting numerous home Bible study classes for her friends, as well as, for her children’s high school friends. She was known to her family as a person of prayer who loved quiet meditation time with her Bible, and her books. Her favorite Bible verse was “Be still and know that I AM GOD.” Psalm 46.10. She adored being a grandmother to her seven grandchildren, who fondly called her “Dede”. She loved and encouraged each one, and together, they created many special memories that will be treasured forever. Her special love, loyalty, and inner strength were ever so pronounced throughout her steadfast support for Hank during his intense battle with Melanoma cancer, which ended in his passing in 1996. And later during her own seven-year battle with cancer, she encouraged others as she continued to live each day with an inner strength, faith, graciousness, and dignity. She was a blessing to all who knew her. The family is grateful for the compassionate care of Dr. John Pippen and the staff of Texas Oncology at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center, and Lee Poole RN and the staff of Ardent Hospice. A celebration of Dot’s life will be held at Park Cities Baptist Church, Ellis Chapel at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 8, 2014, immediately followed by a reception at the church. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75238. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hank Dickerson Wellness Center at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center; Baylor Health Care System Foundation, 3500 Gaston Avenue, Dallas, TX 75246.
