Dorothy Jean Garrison's Obituary
Garrison, Dorothy Jean (Sheftall), died February 20th, 2014 in Mesquite, TX after a long, courageous struggle with cancer. She was born in Jackson, MS on July 3rd, 1930. She was the daughter of Annie Lee (Wallace) and Tattnall Carlisle Sheftall. Dorothy was baptized at age 14 at the First Baptist Church of Mineola Tx. She graduated from Mineola High School and then Tyler Junior College. She worked for Southwestern Bell in Tyler, TX. In 1956, she married George Leonard Garrison and together they had three children. She later worked as a bookkeeper at Yellow Cab in Dallas and as an Accountant for Sun Oil in Dallas, TX, Longview, TX and Tulsa, OK. Her volunteer work included Camp Fire leader and then Mesquite Social Services volunteer from which she received a “Volunteer of the Year” award. She has been a long-time member of Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church in Dallas, TX where she enjoyed singing in the senior choir. Her favorite hobby was genealogy and through her extensive research she earned membership into the organization of the “DAR” Daughters of the American Revolution. She was very proud to have participated for 31 1/2 years in an important cancer study at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, her former husband, brother-in-law, John Peters and sister-in-law, Betty Sheftall. She is survived by, son, Mike Garrison (wife Debbie), daughter, Leanne Garrison, son, Paul Garrison and granddaughter, Kristen (Garrison) Neukom. Also, survived by brother, Tommy Sheftall, sister, Carolyn Peters a number of loving nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Services are Monday, February 24th, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Shiloh Terrace Baptist Church, 9810 La Prada Dr, Dallas, TX 75288. Visitation is also at the church that morning at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow the same day at 3:00 PM at Roselawn Memorial Cemetery in Mineola, TX.
