Dorothy Kidder Ivy, 95 years old, of Dallas, TX, passed away on August 3, 2022 in Henderson, NV. She moved to be closer to her family.
Dorothy Ann (Kidder) Ivy was born in Dubuque, Iowa to Hazel (Sisler) & Earl Kidder on April 9, 1927. She grew up on the farm in Epworth, Iowa; the youngest of 4 children, having 3 older brothers: preceded in death by parents Hazel (1979) & Earl (1967), husband Cliff Ivy (1904-1968), brothers: Keith (1918 - 1921), Robert Kidder (1920-2022) and Donald Kidder (1924-2007).
Dorothy attended University of Dubuque studying engineering and graduated from Iowa State University at Ames, IA with an Economics degree. Dorothy changed her major after struggling with being the only woman in the Engineering program. She always wanted to travel so took a job with Penney’s department store as a mystery shopper. This allowed her to travel throughout the US. Dorothy settled in Minneapolis, working in the Insurance business. After some time she decided Dallas was the most desirable, growing town so settled there around 1952. Dorothy took another insurance position, which happened to include coverage for the Dallas Cowboys. She was a dedicated supporter of the Dallas Cowboys, plus over the years, she became a member of: Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, Ft. Worth Botanical Garden, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Museum of Art, Kimbell Art Museum and the Dallas Morning Newspaper. She faithfully did the Dallas paper’s crossword puzzles even after moving to Nevada.
After meeting and marrying Cliff Ivy in 1960, who sold lighting equipment, Dorothy traveled with him for some time before deciding she needed work of her own. In 1965, Dorothy established a lighting & shade store called Enchanted Lighting in Dallas. She became proficient in making lamps from various items customers brought to her, along with doing many repairs. She traveled a lot with an eye for unique finials for the lamps.
