Dorothy Saluda Morris' Obituary
MORRIS, DOROTHY SALUDA BROOKES passed away Saturday, December 28, 2013. Born at Waelder, Gonzales Co., TX on July 28, 1916, the second of two children of William Byrd Brookes IV and Sarah Mayo “Mae” Russell Brookes. Her older sister, Verdine Mae Brookes Ford, preceded her in death on January 8, 1990. She grew up in Waelder, Texas, and graduated from Westmoreland College in San Antonio, TX, now Trinity University, with a degree in Music. She taught music in various public school systems. She married James Travis Morris on June 15, 1939. They raised their family of six children in Houston and Dallas, TX. She moved to Tulsa, OK after she was widowed on May 21, 2000. She is survived by her six children, Arthur Brookes Morris of Brookshire, TX, David James Morris of Tulsa, OK, Kenneth Russell Morris of Carefree, AZ, Carl William Morris of Modesto, CA, Linda Louise Morris Thill of Austin, TX, and Paul Walden Morris of Katy, TX, twelve grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Dorothy will be fondly remembered for her unwavering faith, kind spirit, strong will, positive outlook, graciousness, gratefulness, and deep love of family and friends. She was content and proud to be – first and foremost – a faithful, loving wife and tireless, loving mother. Those close to her knew that she was also a musician, painter, poet, engineer, philosopher and naturalist. At the same time a proper lady and a tree-climbing tomboy, Dorothy was one who truly loved life. Funeral service will be held on Friday, January 3, 2014, 2:00 PM, in the Dickerson Chapel at her church home for many years, First United Methodist Church, 1928 Ross Avenue, Dallas, TX 75201. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service in the chapel.
