Doug and I became friends in 7th grade at Memorial Jr. Hi, and we remained friends through high school. We had a routine for going to school with Tony Holland riding his bike to Doug's house, the two of them riding to my house on Glenbrook, the 3 of us riding to Roger Sewell's house on Prescott and the 4 of us walking to school. Not remembering what we did when it rained.
Another fond memory was being invited by the Frye's to go on a family ski vacation each year beginning in 7th grade. One year Tony Holland joined us, and another year Dale Herrin joined us. I continued skiing off and on until I was 70. I am amazed that we road the 13 hours to Red River or Taos in the Frye's Oldsmobile sedan with Dr. and Mrs. Frye and Stephen in front the the remaining 3 of us in the back seat. Left Garland at about 4:00 AM and stopped for breakfast in Wichita Falls. That was way too cozy, but we just didn't seem to mind.
Doug was one of the good guys. Smart, funny and a superior athlete. Big loss.
