In the '70s & early '80s Doug & I played in the Austin band Fools (which became the Van Wilks Band). What marvelous years — we toured with many big acts and recorded the album Bombay Tears in L.A. That album cover is framed in my study, so I see Doug's picture every day. In a group of good players, he was clearly the best musician — & yet a humble, gentle soul, with no ego (not common in a rock band). I left music and my life became the business world. A few years ago, my wife Denise & I went for a drink at Chez Zee — and there was Doug, playing piano. We sat and talked for a long time, like we had seen each other yesterday. Doug spoke of his trio, the CDs, his kids, his place in Wimberley. We went back several times to hear him play — such a talented, sensitive player! — but I had not seen him in a couple of years. Rest easy, my brother. Vaya con dios.
