Douglas Wayne Metten's Obituary
METTEN, DOUGLAS WAYNE passed on to be with his Lord and Savior after a hard but valiant struggle with Parkinson’s and Dementia. His last days were filled with the same humility, strength, humor and grace that helped shape his life as a Christian, husband, father, grandfather, respected business man, friend, and mentor. He was preceded in death by his parents Woodrow and Dorothy Metten of St. Albans, WV and his sister, Carolyn K. Buckalew of North Carolina. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandra L. Metten, sister Shirley A. Black of St. Albans, sons Tracy, Todd and Christian and their respective wives Denise, Leslie and Robin and six grandchildren that he adored; Tristan, Jastin, Grace, Levi, Maggie and Grant. Douglas was honorably discharged from the Air Force in July 1965 and, with the assistance of the GI Bill, got an accounting degree at the age of 28 by going to night school. He worked for Monsanto and Sterling Chemical for over 25 years and, throughout that time, he and Sandi supported numerous charities and philanthropic organizations. They took particular pride in starting an educational scholarship foundation at their high school for underprivileged students so that college could become a reality. He took great care of his family and was a particularly devoted grandfather. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 AM, Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Restland Abbey Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association – Greater Dallas Chapter.
