Duane Augustus Setliff's Obituary
Duane Augustus Setliff was born on November 14, 1923 in Creta, Oklahoma and passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 6, 2015 in McKinney, Texas. Mr. Setliff was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Aletha Setliff, five brothers and six sisters including an identical twin brother, David Setliff. The “twins” were the youngest of the twelve children. Mr. Setliff was also preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Edna Bridwell Setliff in 1990. Mr. Setliff is survived by his second wife, Margie Setliff of Dallas, TX. Two married daughters that were with him most of the last three months of his life – Susan Setliff Wallis and husband, Mark Wallis of Denver, CO and Gail Setliff Deputy and husband, Leven Deputy of McKinney, TX. Two married granddaughters that he adored, Amy Wallis Wiley and husband, Kent Wiley of Parker, CO and Katy Wallis Byrne and husband, Tim Byrne of Highlands Ranch, CO. Two great grandchildren, Brett Wiley and Anna Kate Wiley of Parker, CO. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Duane Setliff graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in Agricultural Economics. Most of his working career was with the Equitable Life Company. He began in Lubbock, Texas as a land appraiser. He was promoted in 1960 when he and Edna moved the family to Dallas, Texas. He made one of the largest loans ever made at that time on the King Ranch. He eventually was promoted from the farm and ranch loan department to making large commercial loans on Dallas landmarks like the Hyatt Regency at Reunion Tower, One Main Place and Park Central. He never lost the love of being a land appraiser. He drove many places instead of flying just so he could look at the land. In the 1960’s he and a friend purchased a 558 acre piece of land just outside of Greenville, Texas. They eventually divided the land in half and Duane subdivided part of his acreage and kept part of it to “play around with”. There were many funny stories about fires he set that got out of control, or an injury to an arm or head when he would go under a tree on the tractor and get whacked by a thorny branch! He finally sold the property to a dear friend that allowed him to still go up there and play. Duane was a lifelong follower of Jesus Christ. He served as a Deacon at Walnut Hill Church of Christ and served as an Elder at Pittman Creek Church of Christ until his first wife became very ill. He was a member of the Waterview Church of Christ for many years. He will be greatly missed, but his calm demeanor and strong faith will live on through the family he leaves behind. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Restland Funeral Home. The service for Duane will be held on Wednesday afternoon, February 11, 2015 at 2:30 PM at the Memorial Chapel in the main building at Restland. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, at Restland Road, Dallas, TX 75243. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to City Square Denver (formerly known as “His Hands”), 2575 South Broadway, Denver, Colorado 80210 or the charity of your choice.
