Earl Thomas (Tom) Asel Jr.'s Obituary
Tom passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday, October 17th. He was born April 3, 1939 in Kansas City, Mo., to parents Earl Thomas and Dorris Asel. Although born in Missouri, Tom always considered himself a Texan who “got here just as fast as he could”.
Tom grew up in Dallas, attended DISD schools and eventually received his diploma from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1957. As a youth athlete, Tom played baseball and lettered in football for Woodrow. He was also involved in the Boy Scouts, where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Tom went on to study business at Texas Tech University where he earned a BBA with a major in accounting. At Tech, he also became a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. Tom remained a loyal and proud Red Raider his entire life and taught his grandchildren the “guns-up” as early as possible. Tom married his college sweetheart, Marcia Queen in 1962, before he entered the US Navy. He attended both Officer Candidate School and Naval Supply School then later served aboard the USS CONSTELLATION during the Vietnam War from 1962-1965. Tom attained the rank of Lieutenant and served as an Admiral’s Aide. After his discharge from the Navy, Tom, Marcia and their son, Trey, relocated from San Diego to Odessa, where he began his 50-year accounting career. Tom brought the family to Dallas in 1965 where he eventually welcomed daughter Marcy, and later, son Blake to the family. He worked as a comptroller for United Distributing and eventually formed his own CPA firm with partner Robert Ward. Tom was an enthusiastic coach for all his children’s sports teams and was instrumental in developing the first Select girls’ soccer leagues in the area. He was a coach, leader, mentor and guide to many people, both personally and professionally during his life. Tom was passionate about many things including boating, dogs, fishing, history, guns, model trains, tools, his Cowboys and Red Raiders, great westerns and most of all, his grandchildren. Fiercely loyal with a sharp sense of humor, Tom will be greatly missed by many, especially his wife Marcia, children Trey, Marcy, Blake and wife Angela, seven grandchildren, sister Marilee and husband Jeff Lagow, brother Roger and wife Jerrye, and a large extended family. Due to Covid restrictions, a small family service will be held at the DFW Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Tom’s name to either the DFW Humane Society (dfwhumane.com) or Disabled Vets of America (dav.org).
