Deedy was born in Houston on Nov 19th, 1919, the third of four beautiful daughters of Presbyterian minister, Rev. Nelson Hawkins and his wife Clara (Randolph). She was predeceased by the love of her life and husband of 64 years, Dr. Rev. Walter A. Bennett. They first met while attending Austin College and remained faithful Kangaroos. Deedy never intended to be the last one standing, but proudly reigned as matriarch of the Bennett-Hawkins clan for many years. She is survived by her four children Judy McDaniel and her husband, Donn McDaniel, of Dallas; Robert Bennett of Boerne, TX; Martha Bennett and her husband, Bob Durham, of Evergreen, CO; and Mary Bennett and her partner, Kalleen Mortensen, of Madison, WI. Additionally, Deedy is survived by her three grandsons Justin Bennett of Ft. Worth, Bennett Powell of Austin, and Thomas McDaniel of Dallas; one great-grandson, Xander Powell of Austin, and numerous nieces and nephews. Deedy will always be remembered for her love of family and friends, her deep kindness and generosity, and her commitment to live a Christian life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: the Presbyterian Foundation Caring Fund benefiting residents of the former Grace Presbyterian Village, or to the Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services, or to Westminster Presbyterian Church in Dallas.
