Edith Garrett's Obituary
Edith Garrett was born December 13, 1917 in Princeton, TX. She died October 14, 2017. She lived a long life…ninety nine years, 10 months and 1 day.Her goal had been to live to be a hundred years and she almost made it. We told her lately she was in her hundredth year and she would smile.Mom lived all her years in Collin County. She graduated from Allen High School…twice. Allen was a 11 year school so when they added the 12th grade, she graduated again. While in high school, Mom won a statewide Scholastic Award in writing and still has the gold medal. In 1938 she married B.H. Garrett and they moved to Plano, Texas. She has been in residence there ever since. She stated her dreams were to become a nurse, to write poetry and play the piano. She became a medical secretary and a dental assistant. She did not write poetry, but read poems almost every day. Edith ordered a correspondence course and taught herself to play the piano.Dad and Mom owned a dry cleaning plant in Plano, Texas and she helped him with the business for several years. She worked as a proof reader for Taylor Publishing Company in Dallas.Edith listened to the radio while she did her chores, especially on ironing day. She went to very few movies in her lifetime, but did see Wizard of Oz, Gone With The Wind and other classics. When television came along she loved Andy Griffith, Mayberry, Ed Sullivan, Gun Smoke and continued to watch them at the nursing home on the oldies channels. She also watched CNN to keep up with current affairs. She was an active member of the First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School for years. She participated in community organization such as the Ladies Auxiliary for the Fire Department and later was a member of the Old Settlers Organization. A few years ago, she was chosen as a “Golden Treasurer” by the Plano Library.Mom’s family loved music. Most of her cousins played musical instruments and sang with a joyful heart. Cousins’ Reunions were filled with sounds of fiddles and guitars, and everyone tapping their toes. Even now, she would suddenly burst into song…quite often “Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooly”. When she could remember almost nothing else, she remembered words to the songs and could recite every nursery rhyme ever written. While still at home, Edith worked daily in her yard, which was filled with flowers. Her family and friends were important, Christmas was important and her many pets were important.Mom lived a simple life, never venturing far from home. She cooked simple meals that were so good. Wore simple clothes, lived in a modest home but was always debt free, with a clear conscience. A good, simple life.Edith was preceded in death by her husband B.H. Garrett. Sister, Nell Hurst, brother R.W. Godwin and her parents Volney Richard Durock Godwin and Stella May Sansom Godwin. She is survived by her three children, Sherrie Beth Garrett Walker, Ben Garrett and his wife Jane and Richard and his wife Pam, grandchildren Cindy Seely and her husband Dan, Steve Walker and his wife Virginia, and Shawn Garrett, five great grandchildren Steve Walker, Jack Seely, Garrett Jones, Audrey Singer and Hannah Garrett.Services will be held at 10:00AM, Wednesday, October 18, 2017 in the Restland Wildwood Chapel with visitation to begin at 9:00AM.
