Edith Melva Thompson's Obituary
THOMPSON, MELVA 90, of Farmers Branch, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 in San Diego, California. She was born November 13, 1921 to Elizabeth and Colonel Hamill in Enon Valley, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Bill and her loving husband, Ralph. She is survived by her sister, Lydia Hundelt of St Louis, Missouri; her daughter, Teresa Fontaine of Bonita, California; son, Richard of Las Vegas, Nevada; 3 grandsons, Bryan and Brett Thompson and Christopher Fontaine; 2 great grandsons; and 1 great granddaughter. Melva greatly loved growing up on her parents’ farm. After graduating high school, Melva moved to Warren, Ohio and later to Los Angeles, California. There she met her husband, 1st Lt. Ralph William Thompson. The couple married in Chicago, Illinois on August 30, 1945. After graduating Roosevelt College in 1949, Ralph moved the family to Farmers Branch, Texas where he worked as an analyst for Lederle Pharmaceuticals. Melva raised the family and became actively involved in the community. Through the years, she enjoyed activities such as spinning, weaving, and ceramics. She often demonstrated her skills at local schools and state fairs. She was also a member of Sweet Adelines where she traveled the country performing in various competitions. She was a Precinct Chairman for the Republican Party in Farmers Branch for 18 years. Her work was recognized by President George W. Bush on Melva’s 80th birthday. She was also actively involved in the Farmers Branch Senior Center. She assisted in several craft classes and often cooked and served meals to other seniors. Melva enjoyed traveling all over Europe and the U. S. while visiting family and grandchildren. Melva was a great mother and fantastic grandmother. She will be dearly missed. Visitation will be on Saturday, November 3, at 11:00 a.m. at Restland Abbey Chapel, 13005 Greenville Avenue in Dallas. Services will immediately follow at 12:00 p.m. Melva will be laid to rest at Restland Memorial Park with her husband, Ralph.
