Edith Eleanor Urish Sawyer's Obituary
SAWYER, EDITH ELEANOR URISH, 93, beloved mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, aunt, and friend passed away peacefully on August 8, 2014 in Dallas TX. Edie and her twin brother Everett were born in Green Valley, IL on March 2, 1921. She attended Illinois State Teacher’s College and was teaching in a one- room schoolhouse by age 18. She joined the U.S. Navy during WWII and served as a Lieutenant JG in Washington, DC, assisting in the war efforts to break the Japanese code in the Pacific. Swept off her feet by Army Air Corp Pilot, Captain Robert E. Sawyer, she was married on Sept.23, 1944. After the war, Edie & Bob settled in Dallas, TX where he was Chief Engineer for Braniff International Airways for 35 years. In addition to being a devoted and loving mother to their three daughters, Edie gave her time unselfishly in volunteer work at hospitals and schools. Her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse was finally fulfilled at age 60 when she-received her RN degree with honors from EI Centro College, Dallas. When Edie and Bob moved to Cedar Creek Lake, she organized the first Hospice Program in that area. For her work with the Visiting Nurses Association/Hospice, Edie was recognized as Outstanding Volunteer of the Year in 1990 and 1991. Bob and Edie enjoyed traveling all over the world during 54 years of marriage. Preceded in death by husband, Bob, in 1998. Edie is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Joanna & Steve Kriss, Judy & John Weber, Jane Sawyer & Corky Davis; her grandchildren, Wendy Gilman, Scott, Sean Kriss, Coit, Jake, Jeremy Krug, and Dub Davis; six great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. She will be missed by all who knew her. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, August 22, 2014 at Restland Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014 at l0:00 AM at Restland Wildwood Chapel.
