Edward Hopkins Merritt's Obituary
MERRITT, EDWARD HOPKINS of Dallas, was born January 14, 1930 and passed away March 31, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Marjorie Merritt. In 1977 he married Norma Jean Heinlen, a DISD school teacher. He was employed as store manager for Stewart Office Supply and later retired from Asel Art Supply. He was a member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church and enjoyed all aspects of his involvement in the church. He was an avid gardener and classic toy collector. His interests also included American history, especially the old West. Museums and historical sites were among his favorite places to visit. He was thoughtful, respectful, and would catch people off guard with compliments. His coworkers always saw him as a father figure full of good advice and an example to follow. He enjoyed donating to KERA, YMCA, HPPC, Dallas Arboretum, The United Way, and Race for the Cure. He had the ability to plan projects like no other, and inspired many to set and achieve their goals. He is survived by wife, Norma Jean Merritt; sister-in-law, Etta Heinlen, and his niece and nephew, Holly and Hunter Heinlen of Phoenix, Arizona. He will be remembered as a loving husband and friend to all who knew and loved him. Private burial will be in Ranger Texas. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, April 5, 2014, at 2:00 PM, in the chapel of C C Young Retirement Center. It is located at 4829 West Lawther Drive on the second floor of the Lawther Point East building. Flowers may be sent to CC Young, care of Parchman Chapel.
