Eleanor Wayne Carman's Obituary
Eleanor Wayne Carman, 88 of Garland, TX passed away peacefully in Rowlett, Texas on January 25, 2020. Eleanor was born on July 8, 1931, in Goldthwaite, Texas to parents Daniel Wayne Ross and Rubye Love Weathers. She married her loving husband of 67 years, William Raymond Carman (Bill) on September 1, 1952, in Rocksprings, Texas. They had four children.
Eleanor was known for her wittiness to keep everyone on their toes. She loved her family and was extremely proud of all her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Eleanor grew up in the small community of Rocksprings, Texas where she attended school until she graduated from Rocksprings High School. During her school years, she and her only sibling Nancy Jean were very active in sports such as basketball and volleyball. After graduating, she moved to Uvalde, Texas and began working for Central Power and Light. She met her husband Bill at the Church of Christ where they had a short courtship and later became engaged. Eleanor and Bill married on September 1, 1952, in Rocksprings. After a brief honeymoon, they established residency back in Uvalde where she continued working as Bill attended college.
Having moved numerous times to many states, following Bill wherever his education and career opportunities lead them, Eleanor was the foundation of the home, caring for their four children. When the children were young, the phrase “stay at home mom” did not exist. It was usual for women to be at home with their children. Eleanor was very active with all her daughters in the Girl Scouts of America. She was a Girl Scout herself growing up, earning the maximum number of badges that were offered being a scout. She was a strong troop leader who chaperoned many camping trips and Day Camps with her daughter’s troops. She also volunteered in all the children’s school activities as room mother, carnival coordinator & field trip chaperone. She was an extremely well-organized individual, as one would need to be, participating & managing so many events. In her later years, two children remaining at home, Eleanor began working for the Department of Agriculture in Austin, Texas part time. When Bill’s company transferred him, they landed in Oklahoma City where she resumed working full time now for the Department of Agriculture Oklahoma. As another transfer occurred, she then decided to get into the Health Insurance industry and learn something new. Once establishing residency in Garland, Texas in 1979, a few years later, she began working for Mutual Benefit/Fortis until she retired many years later. While attending Buckingham Rd Church of Christ for many years, Eleanor took great pride teaching the Cradle Roll class for babies. She loved the little ones and enjoyed teaching them about Jesus and the Bible even at such an early age. Her skills were fascinating to watch as you would see infants react to her singing songs that caught their attention. Eleanor was an avid reader and would love to sit in quiet, reading novels, mysteries, and biographies. She could read a 2-inch-thick book in a day and already be starting on another one the next morning. She loved to get visits from all the children & grandkids as she found great joy in their presence. She enjoyed attending their sports activities and was so proud of all their accomplishments. Holidays were Eleanor’s thing. Excited for everyone to come, beautiful, delicious feasts were prepared. She loved to decorate for the holidays and would always have something new on display each year. She collected and had over 200 ornaments she would decorate their Christmas tree with. Eleanor enjoyed hosting holiday dinner parties often for her co-workers because she valued their friendships so much. All were always impressed with her meals and looked forward to the following years to come. She enjoyed putting together hers and Bill’s family history, creating scrapbooks for all her children to have so they would be able to hand them down for generations to come. Eleanor was a great friend to many, always helping others when she could in whatever way needed. She and Bill would deliver meals to the sheltered thru Meals on Wheels often making new friends. Eleanor was a such a loving mother who loved each one of her children immensely and would do anything needed to protect them. She will be greatly missed by her family, relatives, and many friends.
