Elizabeth Alice Wilbur's Obituary
WILBUR, ELIZABETH ALICE SMITH passed away unexpectedly February 11, 2008. She was born September 5, 1920, in Cape Giradeaux, MO to Elizabeth Whiteford Smith and Grover Franklin Smith. She moved with her parents to Oklahoma City at 6 months of age. Betty graduated Classen High School and attended the University of Oklahoma where she met her future husband, Gordon Griffith Wilbur. They were married September 15, 1940. She was a member of Delta Gamma sorority and a member of Chapter CC of P.E.O. She was an accomplished artist, and her work was shown in many different art venues in the Beaumont area. She also loved bridge and golf. Betty was involved in community affairs in Dallas, Houston and Beaumont. She was very active in the vision screening in adult glaucoma clinics for the Dallas Delta Gamma Foundation; she was secretary of the Texas Society for the Prevention of Blindness, and she served as president of the Delta Gamma Alumni Association in Dallas. In Beaumont, she was on the board of Trinity United Methodist Church Day School; a member of the Beaumont Art League, and a member of Southeast Texas Art Museum. Most of all, Betty was blessed with a happy life with her husband of 60 years. She is survived by their son Robert E. Wilbur, his wife Nancy and their daughter Paige. She is also survived by her brother, John D. Smith and his wife Carolyn; nephew, Sandy Smith and his family all of Atlanta, GA; and niece, Carol Ann Schaffner and her family of Los Altos, CA. A memorial service will be held at 3:30pm Thursday, February 14, 2008 at Restland Wildwood Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Texas Society for the Prevention of Blindness, 3610 Fairmont St., Dallas, TX 75219.
