Dr. Elliot Stendig's Obituary
Dr. Elliot Stendig of Dallas, Texas, who had an optometry practice in Garland for over 40 years, passed away on November 8, 2021 peacefully surrounded by his loving wife, Martha, and two daughters, Melissa and Stacey. Elliot will always be remembered as a man who was passionate about two things—his family and helping people see better. Elliot had a wonderful sense of humor and all who knew him, including his patients, will remember him for that as well. Born in New York City on May 19, 1941 to Elias and Anna Stendig, Elliot was raised in San Antonio and attended Trinity University for his undergraduate education. Elliot received his optometry degree in 1973. Shortly thereafter, Elliot married the love of his life, Martha Walker who was from Garland, and he moved to Garland to open his practice. Elliot enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family—especially Martha—and later in life appreciated the photographs he took of those many trips. Community service was also important to Elliot. Among other things, Elliot provided Bibles to the blind furnished by the Dole Pineapple Foundation and for his work in that regard received the coveted George Washington Medal of Honor from Freedom’s Foundation of Valley Forge. Elliot also served as past President of Garland Host Lion’s Club, was past Chairman of the Gray Owl District for Boy Scouts of America, and was an active member of the Garland Jaycees. After he retired, Elliot moved to Dallas where he and Martha enjoyed their memberships in a number of Dallas social clubs.
Elliot will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him, as he enjoyed celebrating life and spreading joy. Elliot is survived by his wife Martha, of 48years, daughter, Melissa Johnson and son-in-law Richard Thomas of Allen; daughter Stacey Wood and son-in-law Trey of Dallas. Elliot is also survived by his grandchildren,Annalee Arrington of Anchorage, Alaska; Ty Johnson of Norman, Oklahoma; and Jordan and Jake Wood of Dallas, as well as sisters, Faye Steinberg of Las Vegas, Nevada and Shelly Glazier of Boston, Massachusetts and many nephews and nieces. Preceding Elliotin death were his parents, sisters; Miriam Marcus, Shirley Ehrlich and Naomi Friedberg.
The family would like to express its sincere appreciation to all those that have provided support and compassionate care to Elliot and his family. A memorial service will be held at Temple Emanu-El, Stern Chapel, 8500 Hillcrest Rd, Dallas, Tx 75225 on Tuesday, November 16 at 3:30 pm immediately followed by a reception in the adjoining fellowship hall. The memorial service will be livestreamed through Temple Emanu-El for those who cannot attend in person a zoom link can be obtained from the Temple. Memorial charitable contributions in Elliot’s name may be made to the Parkinson’s Voice Project at 646 N. Coit Road #2250, Richardson, TX 75080.
