Emma Ruth Martin's Obituary
EMMA RUTH MARTIN of Dallas, 86, passed into the presence of our Lord and Savior on March 9, 2023.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Hall T. Martin and her parents, Myrtle Fay and Percy Carter of Littlefield, Texas.
Ruth was raised in Littlefield, Texas, living at her family’s grocery store in Lunn’s Chapel before moving into a new homestead on the family’s cotton farm. Although she was truly a city girl, she loved her country upbringing. She spent much of her time at Grandma and Grandpa Carter’s house along with her many aunts and uncles. She graduated from Littlefield High School in 1955, where she played flute in the high school marching band and was elected as the high school’s Football Queen.
Ruth graduated as a Registered Nurse from Northwest Texas Hospital School of Nursing in Amarillo. She met Hall T. Martin during a nursing rotation in Austin. They were married on August 12, 1958, at Lum’s Chapel Baptist Church.
Ruth and Hall moved to Dallas in 1963, and later Ruth worked in the Premature Nursery at Baylor Hospital. They attended Lakewood Baptist before joining First Baptist Church, Dallas, in 1973, where they were active members and leaders In Median Adult Sunday School.
Ruth leaves behind 3 children: Carolyn White of Dallas, Hall T. Martin II of Austin and Sharon Benson of College Station. The children have fond memories of the many weeks they spent experiencing farm life in Littlefield when they were younger. Ruth was dedicated to her children and was always available, whether it was help needed with grandchildren, or she was hosting the holidays.
Ruth loved to use her creativity decorating her home and sewing clothes for her girls. She never failed to offer her skills for school projects and Camp Fire Girls. Ruth’s family will remember her for the big family dinners she hosted every Thanksgiving and Christmas. Her grandkids loved to spend a week each summer with their MeMa.
Ruth always told people she lived a “storybook” life. She loved the Lord, adored her husband and was devoted to her children. She was especially proud of her grandchildren Rachel, Catherine, John, Martin, Lili and Drew.
Ruth is survived by her children and grandchildren: Carolyn & Dean White of Dallas; Catherine & Robert Price of Garland, Martin White of Dallas, Victoria & Hall T. Martin II of Austin, Lili Martin of Waco, Sharon & Mark Benson of College Station, Rachel and Braxton Peck of Austin, John Benson of Plano and Drew Benson of College Station.
Ruth loved the music at First Baptist Church, Dallas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Baptist Church’s Music Ministry, 1707 San Jacinto St., Dallas, TX, 75201
