Cheryl Bernard
To all the "Porter" family, thank you. I'm grateful for the special childhood memories of our times with Mrs. Porter and you all. She knew exactly how to make everyone feel welcome and special. When I was in 6th grade she was the one who picked me up from school and cared for me while I was sick until my parents could come and get me. She always made "fun bags" for Craig and I to enjoy during many long bus trips with the youth group. She always had a basket filled with little Christmas gifts near the front door during the Christmas season. There was always a smile and encouraging word. She spent her Saturday mornings helping us learn how to make paper mache puppets at the church. Then she taught us how to minister to others using those puppets. A few years ago I was over near Royal Haven and decided to see if I could find her house. Amazingly, although it had been at least 30 years since I'd been there, and I had never driven there myself, I found Amsterdam and made my way to the house where so many found memories were made. I went to the door and she let me in. (After putting away her guard dog!) It was a joy to sit and visit with her. She was just the same as I remembered her to be. I left there that day reminded keenly aware of the imprint she had left on my heart. I am sorry for the felt loss of her presence here. But grateful that we do not mourn as those who have no hope! Blessings and love to you…. Cheryl (Rainey) Bernard
