Erma Varnell Skaggs' Obituary
Erma Varnell Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. She was 94. She has been reunited with her late husband, Jay L. Skaggs, in heaven. Erma was born July 20, 1920 to Fred and Jewel Thomas. Erma graduated from the University of Oklahoma. She taught at Dundee school while Jay was serving in the military during World War II. She taught training conferences for the Southern Baptist Convention. She and Jay started a scholarship fund at Baylor University, at which both her daughters attended. She was an avid birdwatcher and outdoorswomen. Erma and Jay backpacked both the Grand Canyon and the Appalachian Trail. In their senior years, they traveled to all 48 states in their RV. She read a biography of every president and visited their homes. They also traveled across Europe. She was fiercely supportive of her family and was always there when a crisis arose. She is survived by her daughters, Virginia Ann Jennings and Mary Lynn Kapner; Virginia’s sons Jeffrey Jennings and James Jenning; Mary’s husband Nathan Kapner, son Jonathan Kapner and daughter Erin Kapner. The visitation for Erma Skaggs wil be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 from 1-3pm at Restland Funeral Home, with a graveside service following at Restland Funeral Home at 3pm. “Who has the tenderness of a mother? Who has the wisdom of a schoolteacher? Who has the tricks of the magician? Who has the ability to see the world through a child’s eye? Who has the stories about Mum and Dad? Who has always loved me no matter what I do? Who has the songs to sing to me when I am blue? Of course, it is my Grandma, And I love you and you blessed my life! ” Catherine Pulsifer The family has asked if you would like to send a donation in lieu of flowers, they suggested Talking Books Program of Texas, or The Alzheimer’s Foundation.
