Estelle Slater's Obituary
Estelle Slater was born January 21, 1915, in Kansas City, Missouri to Stella Adelia Norvell Slater and John Harvey Slater, and grew up in Carrollton, Missouri. She attended William Jewell College, Liberty, Missouri, and obtained a B.A. from Central Missouri State, Warrensburg, Missouri. Her M.A. in religious education was earned from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas. Early in her career, she taught public school and was a consultant for the Student Department of the Baptist Sunday Board, Nashville, Tennessee, traveling to colleges and universities nationwide. In 1964, Estelle returned to Carrollton, Missouri as caregiver to her father before moving to Texas permanently. For 14 years, she served as Dean of Women and Alumni Director at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. In 1981, she moved to Dallas to share her brother Norvell’s home after his wife’s death. Estelle joined Norvell in producing musical programs for various clubs and church groups. After Norvell’s death, she continued as producer and host of his long-running Sunday morning Hymns We Love program on KAAM (formerly on WFAA). In 1998, she received the Ruth Award from Dallas Baptist University, in recognition for her dedication to God, family, and Christian education at DBU. She was an active member of Wilshire Baptist Church where she was deacon emeritus. In recent years she has been a resident at C.C. Young retirement community, in Dallas. Estelle was predeceased by her brothers Norvell and Richmond Ray. She is survived by nieces Carol Frantz, Linda McGilvray, Sharon Nunnelee, Ann Slater and Mary McFarland and their families. The family thanks Estelle’s devoted friends for their loving support. Memorial Service will be held at McIver Chapel at Wilshire Baptist Church, 4316 Abrams Road in Dallas, at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 13th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Wilshire Baptist Church. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted into Restland Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, Texas 75243.
