Dr. Eugene Milton Allen's Obituary
Dr. Eugene Milton Allen, experienced the best day of his life on November 7, 2023 when he graduated from this earthly life to his heavenly home. He was 90 years old.
Gene, as he was known, was born on November 30, 1932 in Calcasieu Parish, Lake Charles, Louisiana. At the age of three he was adopted by Golda Hansard and James Orval Allen from Port Arthur, Texas, and lived the remainder of his life as a Texan. He graduated from Hamilton High School, class of 1950, attended Tarleton College, graduated from the University of Texas, Austin, with a degree in Pharmacy, then moved to El Paso to manage one of the Gunning Casteel Drug Stores. He attended the First Baptist Church where he met and married his songbird, Annie Ross Brooks, on July 26, 1957. At the time of his death, they had celebrated 66 years of life together. In 1962, with two daughters in tow, they moved to Dallas where he worked as a pharmacist while attending Baylor College of Dentistry, receiving his D.D.S. degree in 1966 and beginning a career as the “painless” dentist that would span the next 50 years.
Gene was fiercely devoted to his family, was a faithful servant to his church, and was passionately committed to his profession. At First Baptist Church, Dallas, he sang in the Sanctuary Choir for over 50 years, taught 5th grade boys Sunday School, and served as a Deacon. He had a heart for serving, providing dental services to those in need on several occasions, volunteering a week at a time in the mobile dental unit in Brownsville. At home, he was always available to offer dental care for those who were unable to access it or afford it on their own. For many years he was an active member and officer of the Dallas County Dental Society as well as the Academy of General Dentistry on the local, state, and national levels, earning both Fellowship and Mastership awards from the National AGD.
He was full of love and served the Lord daily. Those who knew him as Dr. Allen and those who called him husband, dad, pawpaw, and friend, knew that his smile lit up the room every time he was in it. He always had a story to tell and loved sharing a good joke. He was a little feisty, a little ornery, and full of child-like curiosity—he never met a construction site he didn’t like! He will be missed greatly here on this earth, but we know he is rejoicing with the angels in heaven.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Golda Hansard Allen and James Orval Allen, his brother James Orval Allen, Jr., and his daughter Amy Sue Allen.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Annie Ross Allen, daughters Betsy Wilson (Jack) of Fort Worth, Nancy Burroughs (Mark) of Dallas, and son Eugene Allen, Jr. (Nancy Lynn) of Little Elm; along with seven granddaughters, Bethany Wilson Ibach (David), Elizabeth Burroughs Sheppard (Mark), Rachel Burroughs Bice (Kelby), Deborah Burroughs Taylor (Ryan), Catie Martin, Sarah Martin, and Grace Allen; and two great-granddaughters: Lily Ibach and Emily Ibach.
As a memorial, please consider a contribution to the First Baptist Church, Dallas, music ministry.
