Eugene Henry Hoffmann's Obituary
HOFFMAN, EUGENE HENRY Born on January 12, 1929 and passed away January 9, 2012 in Dallas, Texas from complications from a serious fall. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jane Jackson Hoffmann; his children, Ann, Dick and Steve; ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Gene was raised in Oak Park, Illinois and lived in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, Dallas and San Antonio, Texas. For 77 years he spent his summers at Buena Vista, Fontana, Wisconsin where he was a fixture on the community pier, starting as a teenage life guard and concluding as octogenarian wise counsel. Gene started his long and successful sales career selling manual adding machines for Burroughs Corporation in Chicago in 1952. Gene and his family moved to Dallas in 1969 when he was promoted to the position of Branch Manager. After a stop at Datapoint Corporation in San Antonio, he returned to Dallas to become the National Account Manager for Tandem Computers. Gene was an important part of the success of these companies and the industry as it transformed into the computers and internet we know today. Gene had a full life of club, military and volunteer participation. In college he was president of the University of Illinois Delta Phi Fraternity. He served as a 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve working on encryption and codes. Later, he was an active member of Rotary Club, Bone Head Club of Dallas, the Coterie Dance Club, and various golf associations. He was the founder and editor of the Buena Vista Blips and Quips, Treasurer of the Northwood Hills Homeowners Association, president of SeniorNet, children’s tutor at Neighborhood Service Council, Bryan’s House board member and fund raiser and Addison Rotary Club Founding President. Gene’s true passion was to help his church, Spring Valley United Methodist Church, where over 40 years he chaired virtually every committee in the church including the Trustees, Finance Committee, MCC Program and the Organ Committee. He dearly loved his church and supported it through its good as well as tough times. Gene’s service will be held at Spring Valley United Methodist Church, Dallas, Texas on Friday, January 13 at 2:00 PM. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Spring Valley United Methodist Church Foundation.
