Eugene J. Shields' Obituary
Services honoring the life of Eugene J. Shields, 66, will be held in Memorial Chapel at Restland Funeral Home on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 12:30pm, followed by a family graveside service. His family will receive friends on Thursday, June 23, from 6:00 to 7:00pm at Restland. Gene died June 21, 2011 from complications of his lengthy battle with cancer. He was born July 26, 1944 to Jackson Shields and Nina Rosina Stinnett Shields in Uvalde, Texas. As an entrepreneur, he owned and operated successful businesses in Irving for more than 40 years, including Eagle Tours, Inc. the charter bus company where, at the time of his death, Gene was a ‘hands-on’ owner/CEO. An active member of several business organizations, he constantly strove to make his company evolve and thrive, as well other transportation companies, with an emphasis on excellence in customer service and long-term, responsible industry growth. His passion for his work was matched by a life-long passion for recreation with his family and friends. Throughout his life, he made time for off-road motorcycles, boating, snow skiing, RVing, and aviation. Flying his plane for both business and pleasure gave him great joy during the past 20 years. Gene married Lynn Walker in 1962 and had two daughters- Jennifer Shields Sutton and Patricia Shields Bessolo. In 1984, he married Sharon Broughton Morriss and his family grew to include stepson Rick Morriss and stepdaughter Debra Morriss Zubrick. He leaves a legacy of personal strength and love of life to his family, including grandchildren LCpl Marc Sutton, USMC, Katherine Sutton of Corsicana, Delaney Zubrick of Flower Mound, Michael, Ashley, Nicholas, and Bailey Morriss and great grandchild Haiden Morriss of Idaho. Those wishing to honor his life through a donation can make a contribution to the American Cancer Society in his name at www.cancer.org/involved/donate.
