Eung Sun Law's Obituary
Eung Sun (E.S.) Law, age 91/born on March 28, 1932, died on May 17, 2023 at his home in Garland, Texas after a nearly three-year-long fight with cancer. A United States Army veteran, Asian-American community leader, beloved father, and lifelong world traveler, E.S. spent his childhood in Korea, moved to Japan as a teenager, and served the U.S. in Vietnam and Guam for fifteen years before settling in Texas.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joan, their two daughters, Meimay and Mimi Law, and, their much-loved dog, Bentley.
E.S. served in the US Army in Vietnam from 1960 to 1975, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Following his service, he earned a Masters in Business Administration from Southern Nazarene University in Oklahoma, and enjoyed a varied career in the private sector, beginning at TG&Y, a local retail store in Bethany, Oklahoma. After working as the store’s manager, E.S. was tapped by TG&Y’s parent company to serve as its lead buyer in Hong Kong.
After several years in business abroad, E.S. returned to public service, this time at the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (“INS”), where he served for fifteen years, retiring as a District Manager. During his tenure at the INS, he was proud to serve members of Dallas' Asian-American communities by helping them overcome language barriers and guiding them through the naturalization process. His career highlights included leading two naturalization ceremonies, at Richardson City Hall and Texas Stadium, respectively, for thousands of excited new American citizens. Outside of work, E.S. was an active member of the Korean-American and Chinese-American
communities, and served as President of the Dallas Chinese Lions Club.
E.S. was passionate about traveling, landscaping his garden, and taking care of his dear friend, Bentley. He will be deeply missed by his loving family, devoted friends and so many members of his community who knew and loved him.
A viewing will be held on Monday, May 29 from 9am-11am CST at Restland Funeral Home (13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas). A funeral ceremony will begin at 10am CST and will be immediately followed by a cremation ceremony.
A memorial will will be held on Sunday, June 4 at 2pm CST at the IBPS Dallas Temple, 3rd floor (1111 International Parkway, Richardson).
In lieu of flowers, the family recommends contributions in E.S.‘s name to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas (www.mdanderson.org).
