Dr. Evan Bascom Blakely Jr.'s Obituary
Blakely Jr, Dr. Evan Bascom (“Doc”, “Junie”) of Dallas, passed away on Feb 5th, 2019 after a full life of 95 years. Born in Los Angeles in 1923, his family moved to El Paso, Tx when he was two. He attended Houston Grade School and Austin High School and worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad prior to entering military service. In El Paso, he met and married his dear wife, Loveta Noricks Blakely, originally from Arkansas. They were married from 1946 until Loveta’s passing in 1991. Evan was the proud father of Evan, Gary, Myron and Ginny, grandfather to Tyler and Carson, great-grandfather to Carson Jr. and Heidi and uncle to beloved nieces and nephews. He spoke often of the big influences on his life: Parents Jen and Evan Blakely Sr. and brother Clark Blakely, who met the challenge of the Great Depression with hard work and frugality. A childhood newspaper route that instilled a strong work ethic. A special geometry teacher who saw past mediocre grades to encourage Evan’s potential for more. Service with the US Army Air Corp, 668 Bomb Squad-416 Bomb Group during WWII that earned 6 Battle Star awards. His calling as a Dentist after graduating from Northwestern Dental School. In 1952, he established practice in Dallas, on Oak Lawn, then Douglas Ave where he attracted many a phobic patient because of his gentle touch and enjoyed volunteering at Wesley Clinic to provide dental care to those in need. Lifelong friendships cultivated at Oak Lawn United Methodist Church, the YMCA, Square Dance and DFW Airport Ambassadors. Finally, the Noricks family who welcomed Evan with love and open arms. Evan loved to tell jokes; over and over again! He loved sports, especially baseball. He played softball into his 90’s on a team known as the “Codgers”. Evan moved to CC Young in November of 2011. His family is grateful to CC Young for their dedicated care and compassion. Facing one’s loss of independence is always difficult, however Evan sweetened with age under the influence of CC Young’s staff and fellow residents. The memorial service for Evan will be held at CC Young on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 3:00 PM in the Hillside (Blanton) Building.
