Evelyn Lois Witte's Obituary
Born June 1, 1914 in Jacksonville, Texas to Eleanor (Nellie) Smith Crim and James Rondo Crim. After graduation she moved to Galveston, Texas. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church, helping organize a Emmaus Sunday School Class and Evening Fellowship for the medical students who attended Texas Medical School there. In April 1940, Evelyn married Lonnie Witte and moved to Rockford, Illinois, Living at the Faust Hotel. She was active in selling U.S. War Bonds and received a medal from the U.S. Government for participating in that effort. Since she loved to sew, she taught your wives to sew for the soldiers in World War II. She later received letters from these young women sating they were sewing for their own children from the lessons they learned. After WWI, she and her husband moved to the Claypool Hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana. Because of being active in the New Comers club in Rockford, Illinois, she helped organize a new club in Indianapolis and received invitations to attend their annual celebrity meetings for years. After moving to Dallas, where Lonnie was with the Baker Hotel, Evelyn became active in working with the youth group in the First Presbyterian Church. When they purchased a house in the lake Highlands area, they joined the Casa Linda Presbyterian church. Evelyn also helped organize the “White Rock Center of Hope” of which she was the first secretary. She was also co chairman of the March of Dimes. Currently she is a member of Northridge Presbyterian Church. Evelyn was a Girl Scout leader for nine years and always enjoyed working with children and young girls. She always felt if she enjoyed an organization, she should contribute to it, so she became past president of Trippers dance Club, Lovell Bakers Book Club, Atlasta Book Club and past secretary to the Woodland Garden Club. The garden and flowers were her greatest joy and she shared her plants and blubs with others. Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Shar Gay Hankins and son-in-law, Dr. Keith Hankins of McGregor Texas; granddaughters, Paige Elizabeth Hankins of Waco Texas; Erin Ruth Ward and husband Blake Ward of Tomball Texas; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Northridge Presbyterian Church or the organization of your choice would be most appreciated.
