Evlyne Ora Dugger's Obituary
DUGGER, EVLYNE ORA Born December 23, 1907. Died December 26, 2007. Evlyne was known affectionately in her family as “Sister”, as she was the oldest of three daughters. Her father was Newton Onzalow Ray, a minister of the gospel for many years and the first editor of the Gospel Herald. Her mother was Ora Armstrong Ray, a faithful Christian, wife and mother, and the sister of J.N.Armstrong, the first president of Harding Unversity. Evlyne attended Harding University while her family resided in Mt.Vernon, Texas. She was a speech major at Harding and later attended The Cox School of Expression before becoming a teacher. She became quite well known around Mt. Vernon for her abilities in directing one act plays. Evlyne’s true calling and unbridled passion was a Bible teacher at Sears and Summit Church of Christ and Skillman Church of Christ. She made a significant impact on young people, many of whom later became teachers, deacons, elders and ministers or the wives of such leaders. She impacted members of her own family, taking into her home various family members in times of great need. She and her sister, Margie, throughout their lives, have been a constant encouragement to ministers as they labored during difficult times. Never negative, never blaming, Evlyne and Margie taught by example the lessons of hope and gratitude. Evlyne’s last message to members of her family was, “never forget our wonderful background.” While not meaning at all to be boastful, she wanted to remind us all of the courageous people who went before us and for us to never forget to be grateful. “Sister” was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Cecil Waddell Dugger and a sister, Robbie Jo McClung. She is survived by her sister, Margie Barker, a daughter, Glenda Brown and her husband, Dr. Michael A. Brown, two grandsons, Michael Brown, Jr., and Stephen Gregory Brown, numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces. Private Family graveside service at 9:30 AM and Memorial service will be Thursday, December 27, 2007 at 10 A.M. in the Wildwood Chapel.
