I worked at Kelley Oil Corp in Houston during the time Fair Colvin was the president of Concorde Gas, a subsidiary of Kelley Oil. I got to know Mr. Colvin because I worked in I.T., and Concorde utilized Kelley IT equipment and services. Though Fair was based in Dallas, he often traveled to Houston for Kelley/Concorde business. About once per month (it seemed), Fair would take me and another co-worker to lunch at the Houston Racket club, very near our offices in Kellogg Tower. This was a real treat, if you've ever been there, and he liked it very much. He told us, he felt he could always get the straight (IT) story from programmers who worked on the 'front lines'. He was one of the nicest men I knew.
During some of Kelley Oil's troubled times, Fair took over the lead as President. I know myself and a lot of employees were reassured by having Fair at the helm during that time.
One day, Fair called me in his office to show me something he found in the news paper. It was after having run the Houston marathon, and out of thousands of tiny, tiny names of finishers printed on several large news-paper pages, he somehow found my name. Was he looking for someone else? ...or looking for me? I don't know, it doesn't matter, but I was very impressed. He gave me the print with a small hand written note, and I still have them today in my file.
Funny thing, I've been gone from Kelley/Concorde for more than 20 years now, and haven't seen or heard from him in all that time, and didn't really think about him all that much. But now knowing he's gone, I feel strong sadness in his passing.
My kindest regards go to Fair's family, whom I did not know. To them, please know that Fair was a very highly respected man, by everyone I know that knew him.
Rest in peace, Fair, and thanks for being someone we looked up to!
