Gene was an inspirational leader and a truly intelligent individual. His breadth of knowledge was almost limitless – he could intelligently address business and technical issues on both a strategic and tactical level. Yet, he had a humility about him – he never bragged about his intelligence, but, rather, always displayed a great respect for the ideas and comments of those around him. Most importantly, Gene was a caring person. He truly cared about the employees at VLSIP Technologies, Inc. Whatever the issue, from employee benefits questions to general business operations issues, Gene put the welfare of the VLSIP employees first in his own quiet, gentile manner. He never wavered in his concern for the welfare of the employees – he was just that kind of caring, steadfast person. Gene also had a terrific sense of humor. Gene could lighten the mood of any discussion with a well-timed light-hearted comment. Gene and the qualities that he displayed – his leadership, his caring attitude, and his sense of humor – will be greatly missed by all of the employees at VLSIP.

My prayers go out to Aunt LaJuana and his entire family. We will miss him very much. I think back to when I had a big get together at my house in Greenville. We had 17 people there and Uncle Gene really enjoyed it,said it reminded him of home and his family get togethers. I'm proud to have known him and have him as my Uncle. May the Lord take you into His arms and care for you.

Having had the opportunity to work side-by-side with Gene for 24 years, I was blessed to get to know him quite well, and have him as a friend. We spent many long hours together as he was instrumental in the successful guidance and growth of VLSIP. On more than one occasion during late night reflections, he would share his experiences growing up on the side of a mountain in Colorado. From those humble beginnings, he gained a breadth of knowledge that was amazing. I've often said that Gene was the smartest guy I've ever known. He was just as comfortable discussing topics stretching from nuclear chemistry to how to fix a tractor, yet he also possessed superior common sense. Gene genuinely cared for people. Even in the last weeks of his life, and in severe discomfort, he took the time, on more than one occasion to call me to inquire about my progress after recent back surgery. He really cared. Gene was a quiet man, but when he did speak, one would be wise to pay attention. To paraphrase an old TV commercial, "When Gene Wakefield spoke, people listened". His dry sense of humor and quick wit always kept you on your toes. I never heard him utter a discouraging word. Gene will be severely missed, but his memory will live on in all that knew him, setting a standard that all would do well to emulate.

Gene was not only a brilliant man but an exceptional business leader. He was more than a boss, he was a mentor and a friend. I will miss his steady guidance, his gentle but ever present sense of humor, and his friendship.

I can say that I feel privileged, fortunate and very blessed to have known such a person as Gene. Gene was truly a unique, inspirational and caring person. He showed the utmost respect for those around him. His vast knowledge and intelligence about the many aspects of engineering was shared with me during our many brainstorming sessions that we had one-on-one. I learned much from Gene because he was always willing to share and help others to grow. He would always challenge me to find a solution to engineering problems that arouse. I could sense that he knew the answer but he wanted me to find it on my own. When I came up with the solution he just smiled. All along he was guiding me to the answer. Gene was a "very good man" and will be missed dearly. Gene and his family are in my prayers.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Gene's death this week. My relationship with Gene goes back over 20 years and was both business and personal. I had such great respect for him in our business dealings and that grew to a much deeper respect for Gene as a person. Gene was always calm and ready to offer help in any way that he could. I knew that I could depend on him and that was a comfort to know, because of the often times stressful business situations that would occur in my job. I will miss Gene very much! May God bless his family and friends.
