Florence Anna Mason's Obituary
She was born June 9, 1921 on a farm in Northeast Kansas near Sabetha, and died to be with the Lord on December 18,2010. She was preceded in death by her father Elmer Orlando Brown, mother Glenn Meisner Brown and a younger sister, Ruth Engwall. Florence is survived by husband Robert; son David of Carrolton, Texas; son Charles and wife Brigette of Los Angeles, California; and, brother Wilbur Brown of Sabetha, Kansas. After graduation at Sabetha High School, Florence attended the University of Kansas at Lawrence where she received a degree in Journalism. As it was wartime in 1943, she was quickly employed by the Associated Press in Des Moines, Iowa. She was a feature writer, reporter, state editor, sports editor and wire photo editor. On September 13, 1946, she was married to Robert L. Mason at Grace Methodist Church, Des Moines, Iowa. While her husband Bob was attending Drake University, she continued at the A.P. news bureau until the birth of Son David in 1951. She was an active 50 years member of American Association of University Women and various church, social and volunteer activities. In 1972, her husband was transferred to Dallas, Texas. Florence was a longtime community volunteer, serving over 26 years as mobile meals driver for Senior Adult Services. She has also served over 16 years at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children and RHD Memorial Hospital. She loved her family, her church and her countless friends who will always remember her pleasant smiles. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at 10 am at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Farmers Branch, Texas. Memorials maybe directed to Alzheimer’s Association 4144 N.
