Floyd Phillips' Obituary
Born in Dumas, TX on September 27, 1949, Floyd was, from the beginning, one of the good guys. He was born with the inner compass of “Doing the Right Thing.” His entry into the world was welcomed by his mother and father and big brother, James. Later, he would have 3 little sisters – Patricia, Roberta and Debbie. His early childhood was difficult, but he handled it with determination and strength. Working from the age of 12, in order to help his family make ends meet, he carried that work ethic the rest of his life. He put himself through college, while also working full time at a feed mill, an automotive shop, and the back-breaking work of roofing in the summer. And never complained. He married his high school sweetheart – Sue Burns – on January 17, 1970. He finished college at Southeastern Oklahoma State University and then went to work for Phillips Petroleum Company in Bartlesville, OK. Following that, he worked as an auditor for the First National Bank of Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 1974, he and his wife moved to Dallas, where he went to work for a CPA firm and obtained his CPA Certificate. Always interested in the Oil Industry, he left the CPA firm to pursue that field. He finished his career as a Systems Analyst at Fujitsu Network Communications before retiring in 2014. His oldest daughter, Erica Phillips Lovejoy, was born on January 29, 1975 and his youngest daughter, Stefanie Burns Phillips, was born on August 6, 1982. These were two of the happiest days of his life. And then – his only Grandchild, Evan Jay Lovejoy, was born on May 5, 2015. His whole life changed focus and he wanted nothing more than to be part of this little boy’s life. Floyd was a quintessential student of life. He possessed a deep, comprehensive knowledge and understanding of eastern philosophy, world events, mythology, behavioral economics, psychology and financial markets. His gentle, affectionate spirit extended to animals, and manifested itself in his treatment of his family’s beloved puppies. If, as Immanuel Kant said, “We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.” Floyd’s heart was generous and loving beyond measure. He is survived by his wife, Sue, daughter Erica Lovejoy and spouse, Jay, daughter Stefanie Phillips and spouse, Chris McWeeny, beloved grandson Evan Jay Lovejoy, brother James Phillips and spouse, Charlene, sisters Debbie Pingleton and Patricia Morgan, brother-in-law, Bob Barberousse, sister-in-law, Cecelia Pinkston, many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly and a host of friends. Floyd lived a good, honest life, full of integrity and love and kindness. We are all diminished by his death. Memorial services will be held Friday, April 8, 2016 at 4:00 PM in The Memorial Chapel at Restland Funeral Home. There will be a Reception celebrating the Life of Floyd Phillips immediately following the Memorial Service.
