Frances Bell, 88, passed away peacefully at her home in Dallas, Texas, on Wednesday, May 14, 2025. She was born in Howe, TX on September 26, 1936 to L. Dow Bell and Rachel Ferguson Bell. Frances lived a life defined by quiet strength, curiosity, and a deep love of the written word.
A graduate of the University of Texas, she earned her Bachelor’s Degree, completing coursework toward a Master’s at North Texas State University. Her career as a librarian at the Dallas Public Library spanned many years, where she was cherished by colleagues and patrons alike. She retired in early 2000, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom and warmth.
Frances was an avid reader and gifted poet, finding beauty in language and solace in books. She cultivated meaningful friendships throughout her life and was known for her dry wit, thoughtful nature, and fierce independence.
She is survived by Gene de la Pena, partner of over 35 years, nieces Sharon Opersteny, Susan Booker, Chavonne Slovak and Solinda Jones, cousins, including Sam Ferguson, Alex Ferguson, Harriett Gilman, and Hallie Ellicott.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Dow Bell and Bill Bell.
Honoring her wishes, there will not be a service.
