Frances Bringhurst Robertson "Sister"'s Obituary
Frances Bringhurst Robertson, affectionately known as “Sister,” peacefully passed from this life Friday, June 12,2015, at her home in Addison, Texas. Frances was born the second of four siblings to the late George H. Bringhurst and Frances O. Bringhurst, July 2,1927, in Alexandria, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her older brother, George H. Bringhurst, Jr., younger sister, Sadie L. Barron, and nephew Michael Barron. Frances is survived by her partner in life, Jan Meyers, her devoted pets Stella, Sydney and Taz, her youngest brother, John C. Bringhurst, many cousins, seven nieces, nineteen great nieces and nephews, and nine great great nieces and nephews. During her childhood, Frances especially enjoyed family vacations spent swimming and fishing at Magnolia Park. Frances graduated from Bolton High School in Alexandria, LA where she earned the titles of Louisiana State Swimming and Tennis Champion. She attended Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA, where she earned a B.S~ in Education in 1949, and was an active member of Pi Kappa Sigma. Frances began her career in education in Louisiana as an elementary school teacher. After a few years, Frances and three of her colleagues relocated to Dallas to pursue a life in the big city. At an interview with then Superintendent Dr. W.T. White, all four of the young ladies from Louisiana were hired on the spot. Frances continued her own education at North Texas State University earning a Master of Education in 1971. While with Dallas I.S.D., Frances taught both elementary and secondary math and science. She then transferred to Duncanville I.S.D. where she spent her final 16 years in education as a secondary counselor. During summers, Frances taught swimming lessons through the American Red Cross. After 33 successful years in public education, Frances retired in 1987, to Cedar Creek Lake. There she spent her time bass fishing, gardening, boating, playing Bridge with friends, and volunteering at the Maybank Library. She was also a season ticket holder to the Dallas Cowboys and an avid supporter. Frances returned to Dallas where she and Jan spent many happy years traveling. They cruised the waters of Alaska and Nova Scotia, combed the beaches of Hawaii and the Caribbean, took in the sights and flavors of San Francisco, enjoyed the natural beauty and artisans of Santa Fe and Taos, and supported the casinos in Las Vegas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and cruise ships. They loved to entertained friends and family especially at their cabin in the woods they had built at Lake Frankston. Frances and Jan were advocates for animal rescue and safety and generously supported the DFW Purebred and Domestic Cat Rescue, DUCK Team 6, and Operation Kindness. A very special thank you to her doctors, Dr. Jay M. Jones, Dr. Mark LeDoux, Dr. Howard Mintz, her care team Liz, Lillie, and Mona, and her hospice team Sarah and Lacy. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 27, 2015, 10:00 a.m. at Wildwood Chapel, Restland Cemetery, Dallas, Texas, with an internment immediately following the service.
