Fredric Carl "Fred" Hinds Jr.'s Obituary
HINDS, JR., FREDRIC CARL “FRED” of Richardson, Texas at the age of 87, entered his heavenly home on January 24, 2013 at the Christian Care Center, Mesquite, Texas from complications associated with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was a loving husband, father and uncle; always ready to help his friends and neighbors. Fred was born on July 12, 1925 in Fort Worth, Texas to Fred C. Hinds, Sr. and Vera Lucile Roberts, growing up in the Riverside area of Fort Worth. Graduating from Carter Riverside High School in1943,he immediately enlisted in the US Navy becoming a member of the “Greatest Generation”. He completed Boot Camp in San Diego, California finishing in the top ten of his class, hoping this would help him go to diesel mechanic school. As it turned out there was a shortage of Hospital Corpsmen because the Navy provided Medical Corpsmen for the Marine Corps. Consequently, he and the other nine were sent to Hospital Corps School. He was initially assigned to the Navy Hospital in San Diego and subsquently transferred to the USS CACHE. The CACHE was a Navy Fleet Tanker whose job was to fuel the South Pacific Naval Fleet prior to each major island invasion. As a result, Fred participated in every Naval Operation in the South Pacific from the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea to the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay, including Iwo Jima. Upon discharge from the Navy in 1946, Fred married Mary Jacqueline Mills, “Jackie” on April 29, 1946. They were happily married for over 66 years. He and Jackie have been active members of the First Baptist Church, Dallas for 47 years. Fred went to work for the Atlantic Refining Company beginning a 42 year career in the Texas Oil Industry taking him and his family from Dallas-Fort Worth to Odessa to Houston and back to Richardson, Texas. It allowed him to travel the world including Iran, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Indonesia and Japan and participate in the building of the Alaskan Oil Pipeline; retiring from ARCO in 1990. He is survived by his wife Jackie “his little darling”; his sons LTC Carl Hinds US Army Retired (wife Paulette) and Jack L. Hinds (wife Diana); his sisters Mary Burnett of Houston and Doris Priest of Fort Worth; his grandchildren Lori Root (husband Lee) of Colorado Springs, Co. and Freddy Hinds of Plano along with a number of nieces and nephews, known to many as “Uncle Boy”. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 PM, Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Restland Wildwood Chapel with visitation 1 hour prior to the service in the chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimers association.
