Gailya "Gay" Christal Johnson's Obituary
Gailya Christal Smith (Gay), age 90 passed away on July 22, 2018 in Plano, Texas. Gay was born on December 30, 1927 in Agua Dulce, Texas to Virgil Smith and Gladys Bowden Smith. The family moved to Mexico, Texas, which is now Lake Tawakoni, when Gay was a small child. They later moved to Quinlan, Texas where she attended school.Gay graduated from Quinlan High Scholl in 1944 where she was vice-president of her senior class. Gay played basketball in high school and her team played for the AAU National Championships in St. Joseph, Missouri. Gay was crowned queen of the National AAU basketball championship tournament in 1941 as a freshman.Her family moved to Dallas in 1945, where she married Don Carlos Johnson on May 10, 1949.They had two sons, Donald Craig Johnson and Byron Blake Johnson.She enjoyed being with her family, playing cards with her friends, and watching her sons play sports in high school and college. Gay will be deeply missed by her family and friends.Gay is preceded in death by her husband, Don Carlos Johnson; son, Donald Craig Johnson; parents, Virgil and Gladys Smith; and brother, Harold Gene Smith.She is survived by her son, Byron Blake Johnson and wife Terri; sister, Glenda Goodwyn; grandchildren Taylor Johnson Mclamb and husband Chris, Grant Johnson and wife Becky; Pierce Johnson and wife Reagan; great grandchildren, William Johnson and Nessa Johnson; many loving nieces and nephews.The funeral service for Gay will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Restland Wildwood Chapel.
