I am getting close to retiring after 42 years of teaching Math. I was thinking back on all the teachers I've had and how they influenced me. No one, but no one, had a more powerful effect on me than Gary. I took Trig and Analytic Geometry from him concurrently during the summer many years ago and I based my teaching style after him. I taught at Richland and kept up with Gary for many years. I now live in CA and teach at a small university. My only regret is that I didn't look up Gary a few years ago. To his family…I say he was one of the greats! Reach out and thank someone today before it's too late. Thank you, Gary.

It is very hard to know that such a sweet and wonderful man as Gary has left this earthly realm. Gosh! I will miss him! As I sat in his memorial service today and listened to his favorite songs, ''Jesus Is Calling" brought to mind this poem by an unknown author….Safely Home- I am home in Heaven, dear ones, Oh, so happy and so bright! There is perfect joy and beauty in this everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, Every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, Safely home in Heaven at last….. Rest well. dear man; you are greatly loved. Patty Jacobs

I have know and worked with Gary for over 30 years. He was one of the most caring, competent teachers I ever knew. Many, many students owe their chance at a better life to Gary's remarkable abilities as a math professor. Well, known for his kind and helpful manner, he was the best! When the word of his passing filtered through the halls of Richland, there was a quiet disbelief and profound sadness that spoke volumes of how he had touched all of our lives. Bless him tenderly in his passing and his family and many, many friends as we miss him so much.
Gary was a wonderful intellect in our Shared Journey Sunday School class. His sense of humor and great wit will be missed. He was one of the most kind and most sensitive guys I have had the privilege to know. I always paid good attention whenever he spoke. I will miss him and pray for the lessening of grief for all who loved him. Blessing and thanks for a life well lived. Karen Cottingame
