Gayle Bray Carr's Obituary
Gayle Bray Carr was born November 22, 1947 and passed away on February 18, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents Zemobia Odessa Johnston and Henry C. Bray, as well as her husband David L. Carr. She is survived by her brother Dr. James Bray of Houston, TX and her son Brandon Carr and his wife Christine Curtis-Carr of Abilene, TX. Gayle grew up on a rural farm in Arlington, TX. She would tell stories of her brother working with the animals, while she helped their mother with the house. She often recalled a favorite part of her childhood was attending school, and it prompted her to want to become a teacher and inspire other young people to realize their full potential. After high school graduation, she attended East Texas State University (now known as Texas A&M Commerce) where she met and married David Carr. She was an active member of her sorority Alpha Phi. Gayle taught for 35 years, most of it 4th grade at Kimball Elementary Mesquite ISD. She loved her students, and many reached out to her over the years remembering her fondly from their time in elementary school, some even becoming teachers themselves. Gayle loved dancing, singing to herself, drawing, wine, cheesecake, music, and really just living life. The day she earned her Master’s degree in education she did cartwheels! After she retired from teaching she went skydiving! Both Gayle and her husband David instilled a love of classical music in their son Brandon which still thrives today. Some of Gayle’s favorite memories were of the entire family going to dinner and the symphony. Gayle even had a special bracelet she wore to orchestra performances. She loved cruises and spent most of the early part of her retirement with David cruising. Alzheimer’s took Gayle at too young of an age, but she will be remembered for being a true friend to those who knew her, a loving aunt, sister-in-law, steadfast sister to her brother James whom she loved dearly, mother to her only child, wife to David, and a blessing as a mother-in-law. Services will be held March 8th at noon in Dallas, TX at Restland Memorial Cemetery, main chapel. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, donations in memory of Gayle may be sent to the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra 1102 N. 3rd St., Ste. C Abilene, TX 79601, please mark “Memorial-Gayle Carr” in the memo line or donate online at www.abilenephilharmonic.org
