Gene Hammond's Obituary
HAMMOND, HORACE GENE Gene Hammond passed away peacefully on January 5, 2010, after a courageous and determined battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was born on November 9, 1931, in Saltillo, Texas, and was the son of Homer and Grace Anderson Hammond. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Ann Wagner and Sharon Kay Tully. Gene is survived by his beloved wife, Jimmie Hammond; children Carol Hammond, Athena Strom (Dan), Hal Hammond (Brenda), and Jason Hammond (Beth Jasper); grandchildren Brandon and Ryan Strom, Amelia Field, Hunter and Abbey Hammond, and Pauline Jones (Tim); brother Huel Hammond (Juanita), sister Judy Shelton (Jim); great-grandchildren Dylan and Haley Jones; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other loving family members and friends. Upon high school graduation, Gene left the cotton fields of East Texas for the big city, and lived in Dallas for the rest of his life. He soon met and married Jimmie Mullins, and they celebrated their 58th anniversary in November 2009. One week before his wedding, Gene started a used-car business with Al Morgan, a partnership that lasted until Al’s death 45 years later. Gene continued to run Al Morgan Auto Sales until his retirement in 2006. Upon Gene’s retirement, Al Morgan Auto Sales had been in business for 55 years, holding the record for continuous ownership and operation of a used-car dealership in Dallas County to that time. In 2001, Gene was inducted into the Dallas County Automobile Dealers Association Hall of Fame. Gene loved business, baseball, boating, water-skiing, country music, Dean Martin, rose gardening, and sharing his quietly devastating sense of humor. Above all, he was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. He inspired love in his family, loyalty in his employees, and respect in everyone who knew him. Gene Hammond was never known to say an unkind word about anyone, and it is a testament to his character that no one ever had an unkind word to say about him. Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 9, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., and funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, January 10, at 12:30 p.m., at Restland, 9220 Restland Drive, Dallas, Texas. Memorials may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
