George Muir Chalmers' Obituary
George was born April 20, 1931 in Blackridge, Scotland to parents Thomas and Isabella (Marshall) Chalmers. He graduated from Heriot-Watt College with a specialty in Drafting and Mechanical Engineering, and completed an apprenticeship at Lamberton Engineering in Coatbridge. He proudly served in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) in the British Army, which maintains and repairs a variety of army equipment. He immigrated to the United States in 1958, sailing to New York on The RMS Mauretania, and driving from New York to Dallas, Texas. In Dallas, George worked as a draftsman, drafting supervisor, and mechanical engineer for the John E. Mitchell Company, Reed Tool, and Madix Store Fixtures. He was a member of the Institution of Engineering Designers London. He met his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth, at First Presbyterian Church of Dallas.
George is survived by his daughter Helen of Dallas, as well as his nieces Alexandra, Moira, and Karen and their families, all of Scotland. He was preceded in death by his wife Elizabeth Thomsen Chalmers, his parents, and his brother and sister-in-law, Alexander and May Chalmers.
George was a character. He never met a stranger, and enjoyed talking to anyone who would listen. He was a godly man, faithfully attending church at Scofield Memorial Church, and then at Eastside Community Church. He had an active prayer life, especially in later years as his mobility declined and he was no longer able to attend church in person. He was a lifelong bagpiper, helping to found the City of Dallas Pipes and Drums, now known as North Texas Caledonian Pipes and Drums. He was a car enthusiast, often performing his own repairs, even into his early 80s. He attended the State Fair of Texas every year, spending copious amounts of time in the Auto Building, much to the chagrin of his wife and daughter.
