George Edward DeShazo's Obituary
George E. DeShazo, a devoted husband, loving father, grand and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2023, at the age of 96. Born on June 13, 1927, in Dallas, Texas, George's life was a remarkable journey filled with love, adventure, and service.
Born to Ruby and George B. DeShazo, George grew up on a dairy farm in Irving, Texas. He was a brilliant student and graduated as salutatorian of his high school class. Additionally, he achieved the distinguished honor of becoming an Eagle Scout. He furthered his education at Southern Methodist University, where he gained valuable knowledge and met the love of his life, Anita, whom he cherished deeply.
George and Anita were married in 1948 and shared a remarkable bond for’ 70 wonderfu1 years. When Anita passed away, George’s heart has ached for her every day since. Now, they are reunited in heaven, together forever.
George’s life took a significant turn during World War II when he served in the Navy. He played a vital role in securing Hiroshima just six weeks after the atomic bomb was dropped, demonstrating his dedication to his country and its values.
After the war, George embarked on a successful 39-year career with Wyatt's Cafeteria, starting from an entry-level position and eventually becoming the President and CEO. His strong work ethic, leadership, and compassion made him a respected figure in the company and community.
A devoted family man, George's love and involvement in his children's lives was boundless. Together with Anita, they had five children, George Jr., Janet, Gina, Joann, and Geri, who were the center of their universe. In addition, they had nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
George was an adventurous soul who loved exploring the world with Anita, meeting new people, and embracing other cultures. They embarked on thrilling journeys and visited 114 countries.
Whether it was climbing Mount Kathmandu at age 75 with his son, Sundays after church skiing on the lake, or family vacations to various destinations across the U.S. and abroad, George cherished every moment and experience with his loved ones.
An avid golfer, George found joy and camaraderie as a member of the Riverbend Country Club in Houston and Eastern Hills Country Club in Dallas. And his faith was essential, serving as a Deacon at St. John's Presbyterian Church in Houston, exemplifying dedication to his Christian beliefs.
Gorge's retirement in 1991 marked the beginning of even more adventurous times, as he continued his travels with Anita, their children, and grandchildren. Their second home in Walden on Lake Conroe became a gathering place for family holidays and cherished memories.
Renowned for his culinary skills, George was an excellent cook who relished savoring good food. He wholeheartedly embraced life and lived it to the fullest, making every moment count.
George E. DeShazo was a wonderful, generous man whose presence brought joy and happiness to all. His positive impact will live on for generations to come though the incredible legacy and family he and Anita created.
A visitation to celebrate George's remarkable life will be held at Restland Funeral Home on August 15 from 5-7 PM. He will be laid to rest with military honors at Dallas National Cemetery on August 16 at 10:00 AM.
As we bid farewell to our beloved "PopPop,: we find comfort in knowing that he is now at peace, reunited with Anita and God, watching over us from above. May his memory continue to inspire and guide us through life's journey.
