George Devereaux Johnson's Obituary
George Devereaux Johnson, 87, passed away on April 20th 2019 in Dallas, Texas. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend, George will be missed by all. George was born to James “Jimmy” Devereaux Johnson and Jennie Blackman Johnson in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on November 10th, 1931. He attended Roberts Elementary and Lanier Middle School in Houston, Texas, and later moved to Vernon, Texas where he graduated from Vernon High School. George attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where he received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering in 1955 and 1962, respectively. George was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, serving as president of the SMU chapter. George played the coronet in the Mustang marching band, was a member of the ROTC program, and co-oped for Texas Instruments as an undergraduate student. It was at SMU that he met the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Spaulding, and they married at Perkins Chapel on March 31st, 1955. Through all the adventures and obstacles of life, George and Mary Beth remained best friends, serving as an example of true love, compassion, and kindness to all that knew them. After graduation, George entered the Air Force as a lieutenant at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and was discharged as a Captain. He then devoted his professional life to Texas Instruments where he worked as a senior electrical engineer for 38 years, publishing and lecturing frequently throughout his career. After retirement, George taught courses in electrical engineering at the college level. In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, sailing, woodworking, and studying mathematical theory. George and Mary Beth enjoyed ballroom dancing and were active members of the Kalista and Tripper’s dance clubs. Their church home is Believer’s Chapel. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Elizabeth Johnson, son Bradford Devereaux Johnson, daughter Robin Elizabeth Dembicki and her husband Rick Dembicki, grandchildren Claire Palmore Johnson, Michael George Dembicki and his wife Lacey Dembicki, Ryan James Dembicki, and David Carl Dembicki. A celebration of George’s life will be held at twelve thirty in the afternoon on Saturday, May 4th, 2019 at Wildwood Chapel at Restland Cemetary, where Dr. Dan Duncan will officiate.
