George Jefferson Mason Jr.'s Obituary
MASON, JR., GEORGE J. Born December 3, 1915 in Vernon, Texas to Mr. and Mrs. George J. Mason. Passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2012 at age 96 in Tyler. George attended Baylor University, graduating in 1937 with a BBA degree. He began a career in oil and gas accounting, first working with Standard Oil in Houston, Texas. George commuted from Houston to Waco to date his intended bride and in 1941 married Bobbie McKneely. George and Bobbie soon moved to Boston, Massachuttes where he attended Harvard University and achieved his MBA degree. George was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and after the attack on Pearl Harbor entered his military career in World War II. George spent nearly three years in the South Pacific, island hopping with Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s forces, spending time in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Tokyo, Japan at the end of the war. George was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas. Affectionately known as ‘Tad”, George was preceded in death by his wife Bobbie of 61 years and is survived by his daughter, Jo Carol Mason Camponeschi and husband George of Dallas Texas and Racine Wisconsin; his sons, George J. Mason III of Dallas, Texas and Tyler, Texas, Steven MacArthur Mason and wife Margaret of Tyler, Texas; grandchildren, Jeb, Jarrod, Meredith, Carrie, Rachel, Michael and Andrew; great-grandchildren, Luke, Samuel, Audrey, Benjamin, Norah and Neely; and 4 more great-grandchildren to be born this spring. All who knew Tad were aware that he loved a good joke, a good hamburger, antique cars, tennis tournaments on TV, jigsaw puzzles on the computer, and joining family for breakfast every Saturday morning at the local IHOP. Living a full and active life until his death, George was honored as the Oldest Volunteer in Tyler for 1000 hours of volunteer work at the Smith County Sheriff’s Office. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00pm, Thursday, January 5th at Restland Funeral Home. Services will be at 12:30pm, Friday, January 6th at Restland Wildwood Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or First Baptist Church Dallas.
